A Useful Recipe

Today we're going to make a cheap, satisfying, and  healthy non-photography outdoor photo.

Makes up to 36 servings.

Ingredients: A camera and some spare time.
Optional: an assistant

  1. Leave filters, extra lenses, tripods, and other equipment at home. Non-photography requires none of the fancy, expensive tools commonly used by photographers.
  2. Be sure to forget any rule you previously learned in class or read about in a book. There will be no rules for you to remember or follow while making your photograph.
  3. Combine the thrill of being on the move with your own inborn curiosity.
  4. Be sure to notice what's going on around you, preferably without getting involved. You don't need to change any of the given settings or wait for a special occurrence. Looking closely, you'll notice opportunities are out there already.
  5. [A word of friendly advice: Before making your exposure, make sure you know how to work the camera.]
  6. If you choose to make a picture of a person, this is where the optional assistant can be very useful. It's common knowledge, while you're positioning the camera in front of them, subjects tend to drop everything they were doing beforehand, fix their hair, smile, and stare at your camera. Assuming this is not the picture you wanted, the loyal assistant can step in and distract your models' attention away from the camera--hopefully, getting them back to doing what they were doing before you asked them to let you take a photograph.
  7. Random street scenes usually require nothing more than being present at the right time and place. Any subject that captures your interest will do. While you're finding the position that seems right to you at the moment, keep in mind that the one and only rule of non-photography is that anything goes. You don't need to worry  about the correct exposure or the right composition. Even a picture with a few sunspots on it can be great.
  8. You're done. You've just made your first non-photography photo.
