The Photo Contest: Yellow
This was one of our most popular contests for some time! We received every imaginable photograph of things yellow. And every variety of yellow flowers!
In judging, it wasn't enough to have a subject that was yellow. A strong color like yellow demands that it be a part of the composition itself.
I chose "Yellow Drop" by Jim Block as the Grand Prize. Not only was it yellow, but its a spectacular image. It is well-composed, and is very representative of a "decisive moment." It demonstrates an artistic ability as well as technical competence. Jim will win a Giclée print of his image from Blue Heron Editions, one of the best, international, Giclée printers in the United States, a copy of CompuPic Pro, the digital content management system, from Photodex Corporation, and one of our wonderful Apogee T-Shirts.
For runner-up, I chose David Savage's "Windows and Palm Shadows" because it was a great example of using color as a graphic element in a composition. I liked the composition and use of shadows. David wins a year's subscription to Photo Techniques Magazine.
Despite the fact that most entries were of flowers, I only chose two images that were flowers themselves: Shimon Mor's "Yellow" and Rona Smyth's "Stella d'Oro." What made these flower pictures different were that they were not simple documentary shots flowers, but the flowers were used as elements of an overall composition.
Congratulations to all for outstanding images!
