The
Photo Contest:
"Cats"
This time we received a wide variety of images from
household pets, strays and large wild cats. Here are the ones we thought
were the best.
We chose
"Cat
on a Roof"
by Alexander Williams for Grand Prize winner. We liked it for
its artistic merit. Done in BW and toned brown, the image is full of
mood. We wonder about the predicament of this cat lying on trash on
someone's roof. Is it feral? Or abandoned? Or someone's pet? If a cat
lover, you might notice that it looks a little ragged, and that we are
obviously intruding into its territory. The image is well composed, and
the depth of field and edge-burning all add to the mystery and old-time
feeling of the photograph.
For the First Runner-up position, we chose
Michael Gwozdzik's untitled image. What we liked about this one
was the composition. First, was the placement of the cat within the image, not
bullseye, but off center. Next was the use of repeating colors. One quickly
notices that the green of the windows resembles the green of the cat's eyes.
This technique ties the image together making the background important to the
whole and not an extraneous or even distracting element. And of course, there is
the cat itself: a surprised or curious look on its face and with one paw atop
the horizontal element, this appeals to any cat lover.
Congratulations to the Honorable Mentions in this
contest. All of the images expressed the love or respect that the
photographers have for cats. And they are excellent photographs as well.
