The Photo Contest: People at Work
I say this every time, but it is true. With each successive contest we have, the entries are more plentiful, of a higher quality, and from more places around the world than the one before. This contest was no different. In fact, the quality of the images was so amazing that we had a hard time winnowing them down to just twelve.
We chose the image "Harvest Time" by Lukasz Zandecki of Poland as the Grand Prize winner. The reason is the best said by Zandecki himself. "I like these photographs because all are slightly unsharp or shaken, and that makes the pictures living." That is exactly the feeling all of us here had when we saw this image. But it goes beyond that! The composition is very strong and the soft muted colors make us nostalgic for a time when fields were tended by man and beast. In this case they still are. Also, the motion towards the camera (he used a 24mm lens!) makes us want to yell, "Watch out!"
Ahikan Seri's image, "Varanasi Boatman" was a close second. And I mean very close! I liked the very strong composition and the bright colors. This is a very strong image.
Other images were chosen for their compositional strength and how they adhered to our theme. In terms of pure graphical strength, the images here represent some of the strongest images we have seen in our contests. Everyone of these images should make their makers proud!
Zandecki will win a Porter Case Carry on - Photo Plus Camera Case; a Giclée print of his image from Blue Heron Editions, one of the best, international, Giclée printers in the United States; a copy of CompuPic Pro, the digital content management system, from Photodex Corporation; and one of our wonderful Apogee T-Shirts.
Seri wins a year's subscription to Photo Techniques Magazine.
Congratulations to all for outstanding images!
Our next contest is "Purple." The deadline is July 23, 2001. Join us, won't you?
