Advanced Digital
Black & White Photography
by John Beardsworth
This Lark
Photography Book is an excellent resource for the fine art digital
photographer. The information in the book is very useful because of
the examples of before and after images, the descriptive text, and
step-by-step instructions. All of the techniques use Photoshop and
some are specifically for CS3. The author talks about everything the
intermediate or advanced photographer would need to know, including
how to capture the image, many ways of converting it to B&W,
techniques for optimizing the image, creating artistic effects, and
finally output techniques. One of the most impressive parts of the
book is the quality of black and white images that are created. The
author doesn’t just demonstrate how to make a grayscale image, but
how to create a quality B&W photograph that competes with the
quality and range of tones of the best silver gelatin prints. The
section discussing artistic effects covers many alternative effects
and goes beyond adding program filters - actually tweaking the
image to create the color, texture, and style so common of
photographs created by infrared, Calotype, pinhole and more.

Advanced Digital Camera
Techniques,
by Jack & Sue Drafahl
Advanced Digital Camera Techniques
is a good new book for doing what you used to do with a film camera,
but now with a digital. It covers all of the normal camera
techniques, plus what you now need to know to do it digitally.
Although a lot of it covers what is in most good photo how-to books,
this also has some good tips for the new ago of photography, and
there are some things that you can’t do the same way as before. The
book is a soft cover, 8.5x11 inches, with 123 pages, and retails for
US$29.95.

The Advanced Digital
Photographer's Workbook, Professionals Creating and Outputting
World-class Images,
by Yvonne J. Butler
Here is another great how-to book from Focal
Press. I don’t think there is a single digital imaging subject that
is not covered in this new book, and covered very well. It is richly
illustrated with before and after images, camera settings, Photoshop
tool settings, and explanations. Anyone who cannot create great
digital images after using this book should go back to using
crayons.
This soft cover book is about 7x10 inch,
with 409 pages and retails for US$44.95. Distributed by Focal Press

Advanced Digital Photography,
by Tom Ang
Advanced Digital Photography
is a great group of “techniques and tips for creating
professional quality images,” which is probably why that is also a
part of its title. It is another top quality AMPHOTO book filled
with 144 pages of information not usually found in the general
how-to type books. There is info on how to better sharpen, color
correct, and blend images, as well as my favorite, the special
effects you can do with programs like Photoshop. This top
notch 9x11 inch, soft cover book will not only give you a lot of new
ideas, but also the info you need to make them as good as possible.
It retails for US$29.95.

Advanced Digital Photography
Techniques & Tips for Creating
Professional Quality Images
By Tom Ang
If you are new to digital photography you might want to check out
this how-to book on the subject. The book covers just about
everything from beginner info to advanced techniques for creating
great images, and includes many step-by-step and before & after
illustrations. However, if you already have any of the other
books by Ang, you may not need this one. It is more or less
just a reprint of his past books, with new images added to
illustrate this new one. I’d check it out before buying, as
they are starting to look like one copy after another of the same
material - “if you’ve seen one, you’ve seen them all.”

for US-$24.95 – and is published by AMPHOTO BOOKS at:www.watsonguptill.com

Advanced Photoshop CS3 –
Trickery &
FX
by Stephen Burns
In regards to this book, “Advanced” Photoshop really means
advanced! It is a how-to book that will teach you everything you
will need to know to create the wildest of images. It shows how to
take the tools in Photoshop and stretch them to the max. If you look
at the image on the cover you would think that it is an artists
rendering, but in fact that entire image was created from
photographs manipulated in Photoshop, and this book shows you how to
do the same things. In fact the book also contains a bonus CD with
all of the files needed to do this, and other far-out images you
will see in each section. If you want to start going “One step
Beyond” (that’s an old TV program) with your images and work, this
new book will take you there, but be warned, you may not want to
come back to the “real” world, whatever that means.
This soft cover book is about 7x9 inches, with 366 pages, retails
for US-$49.99 – and is published by Thomson Course Technology and

Advanced Photoshop Elements
6 for Digital Photographers (Paperback)
by Philip Andrews
Currently, in the
digital photography field, there is a push for accepting Photoshop
Elements as an adequate program for image editing; purchasing the
full version of Photoshop CS3 is not necessary for most digital
photographers. This is another book by the renowned Elements
advocate, Philip Andrews. Like his previous books, this is packed
with helpful how-to information carefully laid out and explained
fully in an organized creative layout. Unlike many other authors who
maximize the use of white space in their books to warrant enough
pages for the publisher, Andrews’ books utilize every surface area
of every page. The amount of tips, advice, step-by-steps, and
demonstrations is like having a personal coach for Photoshop
Elements 6.

Aliens of the Deep
by Dr. Joseph Macinnis
This is the companion book to the James Cameron 3-D giant-screen
film by the same name, so all of the information and images in it
are from that project, which was to document the earth’s most
extreme environment, the ocean bottom and its life forms. If you
think that the sea life you see at an aquarium is interesting, wait
till you see what is at 20,000 feet under the surface of most
oceans. Since this book is also published by the National Geographic
Society I would think that says all that needs to be said for the
quality between its covers. It does contain a lot more info than it
does pictures, so it is not a coffee table type picture book, but it
is a great learning reference.
This book is about 9x9 inches, with 192 pages, and retails for
US$30.00 and if a local bookstore does not have a copy you can order
it from the NG web site at:

Along the Blue Ridge Parkway,
by George Humphries
Along the Blue Ridge Parkway is a beautiful book of
photos by George Humphries, with essays by Harley E. Jolley. It is a
collection of some of the most beautiful areas along the parkway,
and information on where those areas can be found to do your own
masterpieces. The cover will show you exactly what I mean and why
this is one of the most visited areas of the US. This is more of an
inspirational and location reference book, than it is any kind of a
how-to one, but if you don’t know where to find great locations like
these, then you have less chance of making these kinds of images
that this area is known for. The images are great and produced with
top quality printing. It is a soft cover book, 8.5x11 inches, 80
pages, and retails for just US$19.95. It is published by Westcliffe
Publishers and can be ordered at:

Along The Divide -
Photographs of the Dan Ryan Expressway
By Jay Wolke
Through Chicago runs the Dan Ryan Expressway and this book is a nice
little photo essay of what you will see from it on any given day,
such as cars on fire, people talking on a bridge over it, the
homeless living under it - its influence all around it. A very nice
example of good photojournalism in a large American city. Most
people may not be interested in this exact subject, but it is a
subject that can relate to all cities throughout the country.

US-$40.00 - and is distributed by University of Chicago Press at:

Alternative Digital Photography
By John G. Blair
This book is
based on the alternative processes that artistic photographers used
to create more creative and unique images such as black and white,
infrared, hand coloring, toy cameras, pinhole, and sepia. The author
takes those traditional film processes and demonstrates how to
create the same “look” digitally. Blair also suggests some of his
new ideas of alternative digital processes like fresco,
photo impressionism, and neomysticism. Each chapter is devoted to one
process which starts with a description and explanation of the
original process. The chapter includes multiple ways of attaining
the look of the specific process which vary in difficulty and
quality of results. This book is for the beginning to intermediate
level photographer interested in creating more unique digital
images.

American Landscape: David Muench
Text by T.H. Watkins
The name David Muench is synonymous with the best photography that
you will see anywhere. This book is yet another one that shows just
that fact. It is divided into six sections of the land called
America, and includes 197 full color images printed in a quality
that could be framed and hung. This book is also filled with
information on each area with over 22,500 words in text and
captions. You also will not believe the incredibly low price for
such an incredible quality book. (I still think that part was a
printing error.)

American Landscape,
by David Muench, text by T.H. WatkinsFor those who love
beautiful photography, all I can say is that David Muench has done
it again. American Landscapes is a collection of his images
in six different sets, which include, mountains, forests,
grasslands, deserts, wetlands and rivers, and coastlines, all done
by the master of color nature photography. I’ve never been able to
find a word to give justice to his images, but for those who are
already familiar with it, there is no need to try. "Total Envy"
might be the best way to describe a viewers feeling when looking at
them, and this new book will confirm that once more.

American Ruins
Photographs by Arthur Drooker
I must admit that I am totally prejudice (for) this American Ruins
book. As someone who has always loved to photograph (almost)
anything old, and especially with infrared, I found this new book on
the subject to be a must-have for my collection. This book
documents historical ruins throughout the United States, from the
plantation areas of the south, to Native American ruins of the
southwest, and even a king’s home in Hawaii. All have been done with
digital B&W infrared images that have been toned so as to look as
old as the ruins themselves. Each ruin includes a page full of
history about each place, which is just as interesting as the images
themselves. This book will make one great holiday gift for
someone special, that is if you don’t end up keeping it for
yourself.

America Series: New Jersey
by Tanya Lloyd
In spite of all of the jokes told about New Jersey, here is a great
new book that travel photographers will love and others will want
for their coffee table collection. It contains the images from
over 25 pro photographers, and they include captions with some
history of the various areas presented. Anyone looking to find out
what all there is to photograph in the Garden State will find enough
places shown in this book to keep them in photo trips for years.
You cannot only see what is there, but also the best spots to shoot
from. This is one of those few books that will pay for itself
as soon as you use one piece of location info from it. Besides being
filled with useful photo locations, it is a beautiful picture book,
and you will also learn a lot.

America The Wonderland
by Parminder Singh M.D.
This new book, by a photographer who was born in India, is his way
of showing the huge diversity of this land and its beauty. The
content covers its geography, history, religion, dwellings, and
national parks with some magnificent nature shots, and nighttime
images that will blow you away. This is a large book and many images
are full page spreads, which look magnificent. There are also
two-page spreads that are really something to see, especially the
night time shots. Even though the images range from coast to coast,
I did not find this book to be a true representation of the real
diversity that was said to be shown. A few areas had several general
images of the same site, but taken from different angles, while
other areas of the country were completely lacking coverage. One
other thing that bothered me about this book is that I found two
images in it that did not look like they were even fully prepared
for publication, or poorly done so. They look like they never even
saw Photoshop.
This hardback book is about 12x12 inches, with 144 pages. It is a
self-published book by the author and can be checked out and ordered
from his web site at
www.parmindersingh.com I was not given a retail price on it, and
it does not even show on the site, so if interested you will have to

American Mood

Mood is a photographic journey.
A series of American scenes that are right in front of all of us
every day of our lives, but only put into images by those like
Farber with the eye to actually see them. Images that are as much
dreamlike as they are documentary, while others having bold colors
that just jump off of the page. This is one impressive book to add

An Evening with Marilyn,
by Douglas Kirkland
This book is a great addition to any photo
library collection. It covers one of the most talked about photo
shoots ever done. An entire evening spent photographing the
Hollywood goddess who is probably the best-known person who has ever
lived. Marilyn Monroe was pure woman and pure child, and one who
absolutely loved being in front of a camera. This book takes you
through that evening, almost moment-by-moment and not only tells
about a photo session, but also the person that Marilyn was. The
book is a 7x8 inch hard back with 127 pages, and retails for only
US$16.95. Marilyn fans will buy this book out real soon, so I’d say
to get it while you can. You won’t be sorry!!! It is published by

Animalia
By Henry Horenstein
This is a beautiful book filled with inspiring images
of animals. Photographer Henry Horenstein used grainy black and
white film, a macro lens, and printed in sepia to avoid documenting
the animals. Instead, Horenstein says “I choose to look closely and
abstractly—to see my subjects for their inherent beauty, oddness,
mystery.” His success is shown with these sometimes hazy, sometimes
very sharp images showing off the animals’ texture, patterns, and
unique characteristics. The book is bound in a hard fabric cover
with attached print of a ray, making it a perfect book to lay out on
your coffee table.

Apple Aperture 1.5: Photographer’s

I did not realize how amazing Apple’s new Aperture program was until

use every tool Aperture has to; organize, adjust, and distribute
your photo work to the world. It covers every tool in the program
and is richly illustrated to show you how they all work. It is the
perfect match to use if you have Photoshop, and this book is the
perfect one to have if you have Aperture, and you will find that
Aperture has organizing features that are not even available in
Photoshop itself. “Take note Apple; “This is the book that you
