The
Photo Contest:
"Creepy Crawlies"
The entries in this contest were by far the best in recent memories in
terms of quality, as well as the sheer numbers of excellent images. I
generally try to restrict winners to about eight, but this time I could
not decide on less than fourteen. The fact that ninety-nine percent of
images were macro shots tells us what a popular genre of photography
this is, as well as how we are all fascinated in the small.
I chose Carol Kelly's "White-line Sphynx Butterfly Caterpillar" as the
grand prize winner. I like the strong, diagonal line that draws the
viewer through the image. But the first thing that caught my eye was the
color. The image is not just a close-up of a caterpillar but a wonderful
composition of color.
Our runner-up for "Creepy Crawlies" was Kathy Shogren's "Rising
to the Top." Again, I was drawn to the use of line in this image and how
the lines formed by the leaves support the subject in both figurative
and literal terms. I also liked the placement of the insect and the
almost playful positioning. It could have easily been the inspiration
for a Pixar character.
