The Photo Contest: Bugs
I guess this is a subject that you all like! Many, many great images. Unfortunately we could only choose a few. In choosing the winners, we leaned towards the artistic representations rather than the scientific nature shots. There were a great number of very well executed images of the latter, that well represented the insect or spider that was being photographed, but we gravitated towards the ones that were interesting for their composition and use of colors. (And I have to say that a good number of photos had me jumping out of my seat when I opened them. Some really scary bugs, and real close-up!)
We chose Bob Garas's "Two on a Vine" as our Grand Prize winner. Garas submitted several images that show that even bugs can be photographed with great lighting and attention to artistic considerations. There is also a humorous aspect to the photo. It is as if two dragonflies met on a vine and shook hands.
We chose Anupam Pal's image, "Ladybug Parade," as the first runner-up for the same reasons. Great use of color and a strong composition.
Lana Arcemont's "Bug" is also a strong composition wit the use of unusual colors, colors that are not always associated with insects.
