The Photo Contest: Glass

It was nice to see the wide variety of entries this time. The theme was interpreted in many different ways, resulting in some very interesting images. Once again we judged on the strength of the composition, as well as the creativity in interpreting the theme.

We chose "Vancouver in a Glass" by Heather van Doorninck as the Grand Prize winner. There were also several entries using this idea, but this by far was the best execution of it. The position of the glass, as well as the lighting make it a pleasing element within the composition. While many other entries captured the upside-down reflection of the background in the glass, none were sharp or clear as this one. Also her placement of the glass on a wooden surface and the grass as well gives the image a foundation. And then there is the beautifully lit city in the background, thrown out of focus so that it doesn't become part of the figure or subject, but sharp enough so that we clearly see the relationship of it to the image in the glass. Ms. van Doorninck will receive a M-Rock Great Smokey Mountain Backpack from Central Camera.

First runner-up was "GlassWorks" by James Stover. It's strength is in the colors. The bright primary colors catch our eyes right away. There is also motion created by the composition, but not quite the tension of the following photo (Sirvent's)  because of the symmetry and balance of the texture of the glass and its placement within the image. Stover will receive a copy of CompuPic Pro from Photodex Corporation.

For second-runner up we chose Victor Sirvent's image "Glass and Steel". There were several images of glass buildings. What made Sirvent's stand out was the motion created by the composition. Because of this dynamic tension we felt that it represented the best of what we were looking for. Sirvent will receive a year's subscription to PhotoTechniques magazine.

Please note: Once again many of you are sending your images as ZIP'ed archive files. Please do not do this. It does not minimize file size and creates more work for us.

And more thing! If you are a MAC user, please remember you must save your images with the proper extensions, i.e., .jpeg or .jpg.

Before sending in your images, please be sure to read over the submission guidelines at: http://www.apogeephoto.com/contest.shtml

Thanks again to Central Camera, PhotoTechniques and Photodex Corporation. Please make sure to visit them online.
