The Photo Contest: "Musical Instruments"

This month we received many interesting photos on our theme. We chose as our Grand Prize winner "Hand-made Mandolin", a musician's view down the neck of the instrument, by Maureen Welsh. We liked the effect of the depth of field limiting the viewer's attention to the tuning keys, while at the same time repeating the graceful lines of the edges of the end of the instrument. The overall composition with its diagonal line makes for a strong visual image.

For First Runner-up, we chose Ben David's view of a parade through the reflection of a tuba, entitled "Parade" taken at a parade in Los Angeles. We liked the balance of the picture with the instrument taking up most of the image while creating a curve through the image that draws the eye though the various elements. The two heads above the tuba give the photograph depth, while reflections in the instrument reinforce the context and provide additional lines. It is a beautiful image that captures the many colors of a marching band in a parade.

Congratulations to the Honorable Mentions in this contest. All of the images showed the beauty of a variety of instruments and made us wish we could hear them as well.
