The Photo Contest: Faces of Our Elders

This was an interesting theme in that nearly half of the entrants were from outside the U.S. I wonder if this might be due to the ageism so prevalent in U.S. society where youth is worshiped and the wisdom of age is devalued. There just didn't seem to be the interest from American readers in this contest that we have seen in others.

Another thing to note, we received a great number a baby pictures again! I am not sure if there was some misunderstanding, a misprint in a third-party publication announcing this contest, or if there were a large number of people trying to make some sort of metaphysical statement. Hmmm.

We chose Anita Garnett's image "Tommy R." as our winner. We liked the quality of the image as well as the how she portrayed the subject. Garnett will receive from Inkjet Goodies, the Epson Stylus 890 Photo Printer, along with an assortment of fine art paper.

We chose Gustavo Castro's image, "Norah." as first runner up. The pose and the lighting made this image. Castro will receive Compupic Pro from Photodex Corporation.

For second runner-up, we chose "Smile" , by Alexandru Averche. The pose and expression of this shepherd is priceless. Averche will receive a year's subscription to PhotoTechniques.

Please note: Once again we received a very large number of exceptional photographs by photographers who did not send in their submission forms. Your photo will be disqualified if you do not get the form in to us. We allow extra time for forms to reach us from overseas, and we have provided a fax number for those of you wishing to submit in that manner. Thank you to all of you that figured out how to send in your forms via email. It makes my job a lot easier!

 

Also many of you are sending your images as ZIP'ed archive files. Please do not do this. It does not minimize file size and creates more work for us.

 

And more thing! If you are a MAC user, please remember you must save your images with the proper extensions, i.e., .jpeg or .jpg.
