Animalia By Henry Horenstein
This is a beautiful book filled with inspiring images of animals. Photographer Henry Horenstein used grainy black and white film, a macro lens, and printed in sepia to avoid documenting the animals. Instead, Horenstein says “I choose to look closely and abstractly—to see my subjects for their inherent beauty, oddness, mystery.” His success is shown with these sometimes hazy, sometimes very sharp images showing off the animals’ texture, patterns, and unique characteristics. The book is bound in a hard fabric cover with attached print of a ray, making it a perfect book to lay out on your coffee table.

Carchitecture: Frames, Fenders, and Fins By Fredric Winkowski and Frank D. Sullivan
The photographers of this book compare a gathering of classic cars to a walk in an art museum: “There is a century and more of history here, works of art on display. . . Whether it is the angle of an air scoop or the roar of the engine within that moves you, it is worth the effort to focus on the details, to look at them as their designers might.” This small, but thick book contains 500 color photographs of classic automobiles. The images range from close-ups of the fine details to shots including the entire car in a perfect landscape. This is a perfect addition to the collection of a car enthusiast or photographer who appreciates the colors, lines and shapes of automobiles.

The Book of Alternative Photographic Processes, 2nd Ed. By Christopher James
This second edition is about twice as thick and has a lot more images than the first. In his introduction Christopher James says, “New to this edition is the following: a complete re-write, hundreds of new images, many new process chapters, coating table and sink set-ups to enhance the learning process, condensed chapters that mirror changes in the media, and a new section that deals with alternative photographic ideas as well as process.” Although sometimes criticized as being too narrative, this book is full of a lot of information and advice on the topic of alternative photographic processes.
