The Photo Contest: "Tracks"

In most cases entrants in this contest focused on tracks as linear elements of composition. The one exception among the images below is Roger Gelvick's "Crane in Fog Filled Field," where track describes the motivating element of a large piece of equipment.

Line is an important element of design and is most often used in photography as a purposeful path that adds or lends strength to a composition. Lines most often move the viewer's eyes into or through the photograph. The "lead-in" line is perhaps the most well-known use of this kind of line. The images you see below are good examples of line as an element of design.

I chose "Bridging the Gap" by Brad Racino as the Grand Prize. The railroad track is but one of the powerful lines within his composition. His strong use of line throughout the image is what attracted me. The other was the use of color, texture and similar shapes. The lines pull one through the image, and along the journey, there are many elements to linger and ponder over.

"Moving Heaven and Earth" by Wayne Sherriff was my second choice. The color are beautiful in this image as is the light. The tracks in this photo not only provide line to move one's eyes through the photo but also combine to create a texture in the earth. It all adds up make an interesting image.
