"Last of the Cottonwoods" This is the only tree left standing in Standley Lake on the plains of Colorado. A spirit tree according to the natives, its branches are a perch for bald eagles from a nearby preserve. The lake itself, just downwind from Rocky Flats Nuclear Weapons Plant, is at the center of a debate on the safety of waste runoff from the plant. Jim Austin |
