Bob Hitchman's Tip of the Week When using a Nikon SB24 electronic flash in the balanced matrix fill flash mode, your display will usually change to display an exposure of 1/60 sec at your preset aperture but the exposure compensation scale will indicate underexposure. When that happens, change to manual "M" exposure mode. Set the exposure in manual mode by centering the +- display with the control dial under your right thumb. This will set the correct exposure for the background of your scene and the fill flash will will be controlled by the TTL flash sensor. If you do not switch to manual mode and adjust your exposure, the flash can act as the main source of light and may light your whole composition. This will usually not give the "balanced" lighting effect you want.
