The Photo Contest: Faces of Character
Everyone waited until the last moment for this one. The variety was wonderful; we received photos from all over the world. Thank you all for the great photos you sent.
I have to apologize for being late in the presentation of the winners this time. The last two weeks have been traumatic and a trial for all of us at Apogee. For those who don't know where we are located, we are only about 20 minutes from Columbine High School, the site of the deaths of 15 people. All of us at Apogee were connected in some way to students at the high school. Shortly after that, I suffered an injury that kept me from working for several days. Perhaps it was the universe's way of tell me to take time and remember what is really important in life.
So... here they are: the winners. I chose the image, "Butoh," by Nancy Warner as the winner. It literally jumped out at me from the pile of entries. It is mysterious and moody. It is a very well executed image.
My first runner-up was "Woman in the Shadows," by Mauro Goulart. When I received this via email, I was immediately drawn to it. The composition is strong with a balance of dark and light, and it, too, is full of mystery.
My second runner-up was "Bread Seller." This is a well done photo. It is well composed and lit, and captures the theme of our contest. All of us here felt that this was a woman we would really like to know.
Our honorable mentions were all chosen for the strength of the image, whether it be an emotional content as in the Ugandan women, or the strength of the composition as in the picture of the "Kid Against a Bright Background." In every case the photographer used his or her talents in a unique and artful way.
