The Photo Contest: It's About Time
Using time exposures is a tricky business. There is a considerable amount of skill involved as well as a lot of luck. The results can be planned out or happy accidents. That is what makes this assignment so much fun.
The winners were chosen on the basis of their following the theme and contest instructions, technical expertise, and compositional strength. We received a good number of entries that did not really fit into the theme, but were very good. We also received a number of images that were on the mark but not executed well. And there were a lot that just didn't turn out compositionally.
It was a hard choice between the winner and the first runner up. Both images were compositionally great, and technically well executed. I finally decided on Beverly Shepherd's "Tip Toeing Tulips." This is a good example of how blur can create a mood and also capture the essence of nature. Nothing in nature is static. The wind is almost always blowing; things are in constant motion. We need to remember that there are many ways in which we can capture the beauty and spirit of nature. It is not always a pin sharp image.
"Mikey's Bikey" by Mike Tanzillo is a wonderful image. It shows the luck involved in capturing moving objects with a slow shutter speed. The final position of the object cannot always be predicted and the blurs will be created by both the moving camera and the moving object. How these lines will interplay is unpredictable. When it all comes together the result is a beautiful image full of motion and geometry.
"Time for Reconciliation," by Major Andras was chosen for its composition and both its literal and symbolic representation of the theme. It was on of many of black and white images that we received.
Congratulations to all. It was hard to choose among all of your entries.
