WHEN OPPORTUNITY KNOCKS….

by Noella Ballenger

When I am traveling, I keep themes in mind.  Weeds are one of my favorite … every location seems to have some kind of weed.  Most people call them ugly, but I like to show everyone just how beautiful they can be.

This milkweed (at least that is what I call it) was wonderful with the light striking it.  I shot it against a shadow and used a large aperture setting.  What I really like about it is the contrast of the sharp, prickly look of the body of the weed with the soft fluff that carries the seed to other locations.

I hate escalators and when my sister told me we were going on the subway and that meant riding on one, I was shaking in my boots.  Not an experience I wanted at all but I had no choice.  So with heart … and camera… in hand, we got on the escalator and started down.

When we got down to the platform and were waiting for our train, you could tell when it was coming because of the air pressure in the tunnel.  I wanted to capture the feeling of the train rushing by.
