WHEN OPPORTUNITY KNOCKS….

by Noella Ballenger

Learn how a travel photographer can mentally prepare to visit a new location.

Once I was settled on the train, I seemed to relax and notice my surroundings.  I am not a people or street shooter, but I loved the idea that you could take your dog on the train.  I don’t know if it is allowed everywhere, but it was fun to see.

The “almost icon” shot!  I really wanted to get the Tom Mangelson Icon shot of the bear with his mouth open and the fish flying in.  This was the closest I got to it.

When I finally stopped trying for the icon shot, I began to look around.  I saw this Mother Bear teaching her cub how to swim and fish.  She was a good mom and soon the cub began to get the idea.

When they came out of the water a few minutes later, the cub noticed us on the viewing platform and began to show his curiosity and courage … from the safety of near-by Mother.  Not the ultimate “icon” shot, but I wouldn’t have missed the mother-cub interaction for anything.”
