The Photo Contest: Red
We received far more entries in this
contest than in any one before. We did our best to limit the finalists to
ten, but the process was a struggle, since so many of the images were
good.
Red is a very difficult color to
reproduce on film. Without care, color labs will print images that contain
strong reds off color. In fact, many of the prints we received were
orange, although we knew they were supposed to be red. However, we didn't
penalize anyone for a lab's poor printing. As is usually the case, the
images sent to us by email seemed to have the best reproduction, because
the senders had already taken the trouble of adjusting the color. We
encourage more of you to send your entries by email if you have the
equipment and software to do so. Of course, we will always accept photos
by ground mail.
For the Grand Prize, we chose Larry
De Kock's image, "Red for the Blood They Shed." This image
is a very strong graphic composition. We liked the placement of the figure
in front and the overall balance it achieves. For many Americans, this
image will have very strong emotional content, as well (although that is
not why we chose it).
Carlos Eduardo Junqueira Correa's
"Red Dancer" placed second. We loved the energy and motion in
it, as well as the colors.
The second runner-up was John Stier's
"Red Church Door." The composition is simple, well balanced, and
inviting. The open door adds an additional invitation, and the autumn
leaves in the upper right corner add nice balance in color and weight.
All of the honorable mentions were
chosen for their special qualities--i.e. unique presentation, strong
composition, or apt use of the color red. Congratulations to everyone.
