The Photo Contest: Fences

Our Forty-seventh Bi-monthly Contest netted us a wide variety of images of fences. The quality of the vast majority of them were excellent, so it was once again hard to choose among them. We decided on "Farmer's Wall" by Matt McKee as the Grand Prize Winner. The soft warm colors of a late autumn day creates a nostalgic feeling. Summer has past and the cold days of winter are almost upon us. The old wall built generations ago reminds us of the passing of time. I liked the intentional blurring of the image around the corners and what appears to be a slight edge burn, or perhaps that was just the scene. Regardless, the effect of the two is to draw you to the fence, which in turn pulls you into the picture. McKee wins a copy of Compic Pro from Photodex Corporation.

This time's First Runner-up is Donna Barne's image of a fence in a field among wildflowers. I liked the composition and also the feeling it produced. The way the fence was placed within the picture created a strong graphic element. Barnes wins a year's subscription to PhotoTechniques magazine.

Our second runner up was the image by Adam Roscoe. Beginning photographers often forget the importance of shadows. They have weight and mass within the photograph. Here is an excellent example of just that. It is the shadows of the fence that are the subject of this image. Here they show us the shape of the fence at the same time have a character of their own. Roscoe wins a one year subscription to The Art List.

Congratulations to the Honorable Mentions in this contest. Your images were also  marvelous.
