Camera Raw 101: Better Photos
with Photoshop Elements, and Lightroom The world of photography is past the dilemma of film versus digital. Now that the age of digital photography is a part of almost all professional photographers' mindset, the knowledge of a new set of skills is necessary. Instead of needing film and darkroom skills, photographers now need to know how to make the highest quality digital files. To accomplish this, all professional cameras and many consumer cameras come with a camera RAW setting. This book, from Amphoto, shows the reader how to use camera RAW in the camera, in their digital workflow, and in file conversion. The author includes the basics, like why camera RAW is the best choice and how to adjust the image controls to an image without damaging the file quality. The author then goes beyond the basics by discussing white balance, noise control, and black and white conversions. The advanced tools that are suggested help to make creative and high quality images with vignetting, curves, automating camera RAW, and High Dynamic Range (HDR) photography. All this is demonstrated with easy-to-read text, example images, and screen shots showing windows and settings in Photoshop Elements and Lightroom. This is an excellent resource for the digital photographer who wants to increase their quality of images. Text: A

Mastering Filters for Photography: The
Complete Guide to Digital and Optical Techniques for High-Impact
Photos It is so easy as a photographer to spend all your time on exposure, composition, workflow, and running your business. You can forget that there are tools out there that have possibilities for helping you enhance the technical and creative aspects of your images. To help you with just that, Amphoto has created a book completely on filters. Now well in the digital photography age, there are digital filters that provide a infinite number of possibilities, without replacing your ability to still use the optical filters on the end of your digital camera lens. This book talks about both filters and demonstrates the effects by showing before and after images, comparing different filters in the same setting, and images documenting the equipment used. The book is laid-out in a very organized format, making it an excellent resource for any level of photographer. Text: A

Camera Creative: Professional Photography
Techniques for Innovative Images This book is a lot of fun! It helps you use your digital camera in creative ways to capture unique images. It’s organized into different projects. A few of them have to do with creating traditional film effects like twin lens reflex or stereograph images. There are other projects such as portable flash accessories, digital cross processing, and model world (making landscape photographs look like photographs of a miniature model). Turning the pages to look through the many ideas gets the reader very excited about the unique, creative, and often funny possibilities of digital photography. The author, Chris Gatcum has compiled some outstanding suggestions for having fun with digital photography. It is a great book for getting any level of photographer excited about playing with their camera or their images. Text: A

Overlooked Undertakings I was immediately attracted to Audrey Heller’s images when I saw her booth at the Cherry Creek Arts Festival in Denver, Colorado. She has taken plastic people in miniature scale and placed them in every day settings of the natural scale. The juxtaposition of different sizes tells a visual story. One of her images, titled Lifesaver, is a miniature female swimmer amongst life-sized Lifesaver mint candies on a reflective blue background. Another image includes a lady dressed for her housekeeping duties sweeping up giant crumbs from a piece of cake. The images suggest photojournalism and call for recognition of these little people’s daily dealings with a giant world. A great book to have on your coffee table to flip through and stare at or to create conversation with others. Text: N/A

Lives of Devotion: The Many Faces of Faith This is a beautiful view of many faiths around the world. The book is organized into regions of the world and the religions that are found there. The text starts each section describing the ceremonies, people, and places. Most of the photographs are as large as the page or span two pages, allowing you to see the many details documented in the scenes. Additional small images are included amongst the text to further explain the text. The photographs are gorgeous and respectfully document many people’s lives and devotion to their faith. The book is fascinating and would intrigue those interested in documentary photography or world religions. Text: A |
