Hitchman's More Great Photo Locations in North America
You’ll
have to arrive during a low tide to be able to walk out to the old
lighthouse on Battery Point in Crescent City. This is the last town before
the Oregon Border on California’s North Coast and a great place to
photograph seascapes and ancient redwood forests. When driving north or
south on Highway 101 through Crescent City, turn west on Front Street and
drive out to Battery Point. Arrive during a low tide, park your car in the
lot, and walk out across the tidepools to the small “island” where the
lighthouse sits. This is an especially good location for a sunset photo.
Bring a wide-angle lens; this is a small island. Be careful not to get
trapped out there by an incoming tide. You can find a tide table at the
National Park Visitor Center in Crescent City where you can also find info
about the nearby Redwood National Park. The
groves in Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park, east of Crescent City are
filled with blooming rhododendrons in late May and early June. If
you are planning a photo exploration up the Northern California Coast
and into the Redwood Empire, read my Photograph America Newsletter #17 - “North
of the Golden Gate - Northern California Coast.”
