The Photo Contest: Purple

Since we began our bi-monthly contests, it was our hope that photographers would take our challenge of creating new photographs for the contest theme. While, over the years, we have received  many photographs that were clearly taken with the contest in mind, it was not until this one that a large number of good images were received that were created by photographers who took the contest theme as a challenge to create new images.

We chose Lana Arcemont's image, "Purple Thread," as the winner of this contest. We liked her effort to stick to the theme, to create an image for the theme and the technical execution of her idea. It is well composed, well lit and is very sharp. Lana will receive a Giclée print of his image from Blue Heron Editions, one of the best, international, Giclée printers in the United States; a copy of CompuPic Pro, the digital content management system, from Photodex Corporation; and one of our wonderful Apogee T-Shirts.

We chose Jane Linders, "Purple Lily," as runner-up. This is clearly a digitally enhanced photo. It was chosen because of the strong compositional elements and artistic interpretation of the theme. Jane wins a year's subscription to Photo Techniques Magazine.

Please note: We received a very large number of exceptional photographs this time by photographers who did not send in their submission forms. Your photo will be disqualified if you do not get the form in to us. We allow extra time for forms to reach us from overseas, and we have provided a fax number for those of you wishing to submit in that manner.

Also, many of you have asked us about the acceptance of digital photography or digitally altered images in the contest. As we have said in the past, these are acceptable, as we have shown this month. This contest is about the art of photography. We feel that a photographer should be able to use whatever tools are available to him/her to represent his/her vision. Some of you are wizzes in the darkroom, skills and resources that are not available to everyone. Others have only their computers as their darkrooms. Both are acceptable forms of photographic/artistic expression as far as we are concerned.

Congratulations to all for outstanding images!

Our next contest is "Food." The deadline is September 23, 2001. Join us, won't you?
