I
wasn't sure what to expect when we announced this contest. What we
got were tons of photos of mothers and their children. Of course!
What better describes the term "mother" than an image of her and her
baby. There were many fine portraits and I was also surprised by the
number of good black and white ones.
So, our Grand Prize winner goes to Anupam Pal's image, "Mother and
Daughter #1". I was struck by both the lighting and the pose. The
thin shaft of light falls upon the baby's face, the edge of it just
catching the mother's face to define her profile. There is enough
light reflecting off of the baby's face to light the mother's
features and her kiss. Haven't we all been witness to the power of a
baby to light up its mother's face?

Amanda Padgham and her self portrait, "Cody and
Me" take the first runner-up position. This was another great
example of good lighting. The baby eyes meets ours and as such is
probably the first thing we see. Is the baby as curious about what
is going on as we are? And once again the loving glow of Mom's face
completes the picture. Padgham will receive a

"Adelie and Chick"
by Cara Sucher takes the second runner-up spot. We received a number
of animal mom and baby pictures. This is a wonderful example that
the bond between mother and child is not limited to humankind. And
this photo is so similar to its human neighbors in content and
composition, that it drives home the feeling of this bond.
Sucher
will receive a year's subscription to
Photo Techniques Magazine and
a one year subscription to
The Art List.
