Once again, we received some wonderful images.
Congratulations to all that entered. In this contest we considered
the subject, itself, as being of primary importance. Fish come in
all shapes, colors and sizes. We were looking for photos that
portrayed the beauty of these animals. We judged these
images on the impact of the image, the technical abilities shown in
capturing these creatures, and finally the artistic skill of the
photographer in creating his or her composition.
For our Grand Prize winner, we chose
"Risa", by Daniel Percivall. This was a
great close-up with a lot of color. The gold fish was a pet of the
Percivall family. In this picture, the fish reminds us a lot of the
fish created for animated films like "Finding Nemo." We
almost expect it to start talking. The shallow depth of field
focuses our eyes on its eyes and mouth, two areas of the "face" that
evoke the most amount of emotion in us, no matter the animal, and
contributes greatly to our anthropomorphic tendencies.
"Leafy Sea Dragon",
by Jill E.
Snyder, took our First Runner-up position. This was another example of
the variety of colors and shapes of fish. Taken at the aquarium in
Atlanta, this image is also full of color, shapes and forms. The low
light of the aquarium added its own difficulties in taking this photo.
The fact that is is well exposed and sharp says a lot about the skill of
the photographer.
Finally, Second Runner-up goes to
Fran Roccaforte for her photo, "Gold Eyes."
This image has a tropical feel because of the bright floral-like
colors. The composition and sense of movement grabbed are
attention.
Congratulations to the Honorable Mentions in this
contest. All of your images demonstrated good technical and artistic
abilities.Click on each image to see larger version.
