Let's Get Digital

Photo Art Lesson 2:

A visual guide to creating a black & white image from a color slide

What is the best way to create a B/W image in Photoshop?
Do I need a B/W transparency or film to get a BW image?
When it comes to B/W, what are my options?
These are some typical question asked by many.  With this lesson, I will try to explain some options you have in Photoshop to create a great B/W image.

We start with a normal colored photograph of a flower or flowers.
In Photoshop, you have three options which are as follows:

1) Image----> mode---> grayscale.
By using this method you have limited your option to the use of information available in 3 RGB channels.

(This image in the future can be enhanced with the CURVE or LEVELS tool.)

2) You can go to
Image---> Adjust----> Hue/Saturation
and de-saturate the image.

In this method you are in RGB mode
This method of creating gray scale leads to many other options, but for B/W creation; it is limited.
3)  Using the Channel Mixer is by far the best method!
Image----> Adjust---->
Channel Mixer (check the monochrome box).--> OK

As you open, you will notice the difference. Now you have RGB channels which contains monochrome information that are available to you.  By moving the sliders towards the right and left; you will be able to mix different information as you see fit.
