Photography Tours For  2017

2017 is almost upon us, and there’s no better time than right now to start booking your next 2017 photography tour. Whether you’ll be departing on your first ever excursion into the big wide world of pictures, or are a seasoned tour veteran, there are a few things to keep in mind when putting your big vacation together.

Doing everything ahead of time will not only save you major headaches later on, but will also keep your expenses down to a minimum. As the holidays approach and tour packages fill up, prices rise, so just as in everything else, it’s the early bird that catches the worm.

The question will be whether you’ll have a comfortable pile of spending cash while you’re out photographing that bird, or if you’ll be a bit more strapped than you would have been had you booked your tour earlier.

Whenever you decide to make a move on your dream tour, your number one concern should be about the location and focus of the company. If you find yourself at your happiest when you’re taking shots of nature and wildlife, then make sure that your tour company specializes in those areas. So that’s something to keep in mind when planning your photography tour in 2017

Since the new year is still a bit away, now would be the perfect time to research any prospective tours. Word of mouth is a great way to tell how well any given company will fit in with your desires and connecting with people who have used them in past is easier than ever.

Finally, remember that it’s supposed to be fun! Be prepared to let yourself enjoy the experience and not dial in too intensely to the images that you’re capturing. You are going to be introduced to a whole new group of people who are just as passionate about photography as you are, so don’t be afraid to strike up a conversation with someone.

Let yourself travel outside of your comfort zone, both in terms of letting new friends into your life and your images and you’ll have the time of your life!

Photography workshops

With the new year rapidly approaching, now is the perfect time to finally pull the trigger on booking that photography workshop that you’ve always dreamed of attending. With attendance still waiting to be filled, and prices still low, the sooner you act, the better your overall experience will really be. Before you hand out your credit card numbers, though, there a few things that you are going to want to check off your list when trying to find the best fit for you.

Make sure that the workshop focuses on content that you are passionate about. If you love to shoot city skylines as the sun begins to set and the horizon ignites in shades of red, yellow and purple, then a workshop that highlights studio work is not very likely to satisfy your creativity.

There are many different ways to go about vetting prospective workshops, but the easiest and most effective method is simply to look at the example work that can be found on any workshop’s web site. Make sure that not only the subjects pique your interest, but also that the best work is done with your favorite photographic aspects. For example, if lighting is your thing, then make sure the work put forth by your workshop make the best use of it.

You’re also going to want to take a look at the instructor for the course. Every photographer worth his salt has his or her web site that you can check out, so make sure their work is something that you would like to aspire to. Remember that they are going to be teaching you, so you’re certainly going to want something that you actually want to be taught. If the instructor relies heavily on post effects and you’re more of a snap shot kind of person, then you’ll quickly find yourself in the middle of an existential crisis once the workshop gets rolling.

You are also going to want to check out plenty of reviews for any prospective place. The people who write them are people who have already taken the workshop, so their experiences should relay the information that you want to hear.

The new year brings an unlimited number of new possibilities, so make sure that you make the best of what’s to come and do something that you will remember for the rest of your life. Most importantly, don’t forget to have fun!

In Focus with Michele BurgessJanuary 28/29-February 14, 2017:  Tanzania Migration Safari

I have a very special safari coming up — Tanzania during the wildebeest migration and birthing time, which draws a lot of big cats to the Serengeti. Excellent photo opportunities for wildlife up close and personal! In February and March, an estimated two million wildebeests and zebras invade Tanzania to give birth after the short rains. Our week-long stay at Ndutu Safari Lodge in the Serengeti ecosystem offers fabulous opportunities to view and photograph the migration. There are resident prides of lions and a wonderful variety of birds, animals, and habitats. Tarangire National Park is famous for its huge number of elephants, tree-climbing lions, resident herds of zebras and wildebeests, and very photogenic baobab trees. Ngorongoro Crater is home to a plethora of animals that inhabit the forests, plains, hills, rivers, and lakes in this sunken caldera, a natural wonder of the world.

Nomad Photo Expeditions
Extraordinary photographic experiences With  Harry Fisch, winner (later disqualified) of the “Places” category 2012 National Geographic World  Photo Contest and 2013 finalist at  the Sony World Photography Awards.
Expeditions are formed by groups of between 6 to 8 people. In some places and situations and with the aim of achieving the greatest intimacy possible within the area, the group is divided into even smaller groups, each one of them accompanied by a guide and/or photographer. In this way integration in the locations is easier. You don’t have to be an expert or a professional photographer to enjoy our travels. This is not a touristic trip or a sightseeing tour in which a photographer has been included. Everybody can participate, but the photographic passion  is essential. The aim of our photographic journeys is to develop photographic abilities and a personal vision to create emotionally charged images that come to express the particular viewpoint of each participant.Click here for a calendar view of the upcoming tours
